And despite facing a well organised Villans outfit in their first game under Paul Lambert, Allardyce’s charges pulled off a slim victory thanks to Kevin Nolan’s first-half goal, leaving Allardyce to laud the efforts of his men.
He said: “To get off to a winning start at home was great for us against Aston Villa who are a side of great reputation and have been in the Premier League for a long, long time.
“I think that our organisation, our determination, our fitness and then our quality shone through in the end to win us the game in and out of possession because we mastered the tactics that Aston Villa had to offer.
“Even though they had a lot of possession we didn’t let them penetrate us and then when we began to play a little better with a little more quality we started to put them under a lot of pressure.
“In the end I thought we were the better team and deserved to win.”
